Thank you: The McDonald’s Campaign ended with 701 Signatures Submitted to 16 McDo Branches in 3 Countries!

The fight for a sustainable future is a constant battle, and whatever we contribute, to push the movement forward, matters. Therefore, we must act.

I started a year-long campaign around March 2019 entitled “McDonald’s: Prioritize Sustainability Now!” In my mind, I had 3 goals when I pushed for this campaign. One would be to encourage the fast-food chain giant, McDonald’s, to prioritize sustainability in all of their commercial operations. Second is to let business leaders know that we are not okay with them sabotaging our future in exchange for business profit. Lastly, it was to let everyone know that it’s totally okay to stand strong against all forms of environmental abuse happening today. As I look back today, I hope that this year-long journey was able to at least create a ripple effect in all of those seemingly unreachable goals.

Zerowaste Struggles amid the COVID-19 Crisis

It was late January of 2020 when I first became alarmed by the COVID-19 disease. I’ve read countless alarming news from China. Thousands of people were infected by the nCoV daily. Even more unfortunate news detail the increasing number of deaths from the virus in only a span of weeks. It scared me a lot. I live in Japan, and it has been evident that a large number of Chinese nationals have fled to Japan to escape the then COVID-19 outbreak in their country. That in itself, has already scared me to the bone. I knew I needed to be careful, that I needed protect myself. But at first, I was strong to not consider any changes in my lifestyle.

As many of my friends know, I am currently on a journey to live a Sustainable Lifestyle. I started doing the Zerowaste Lifestyle last April 2018, then I adopted the Sustainable Lifestyle in the middle of 2019. Throughout my journey, I’ve been challenged a lot. I’ve experienced difficulties starting the ZW Lifestyle when I was still living in the Philippines, but I overcame it by being creative with my ways. When I started living here in Japan, the dependency of the Japanese community with product packaging has forced me to tolerate few unsustainable alternatives in my daily needs. Nonetheless, I persevered to maintain a low impact as much as possible. Even the Influenza seasons here in Japan have never shaken me to abandon my sustainable lifestyle practices. However, the horror of these recent months sinked in to me day by day. The mere epidemic has now become a pandemic. I saw how it spread from just China to now 199 countries globally. I saw the COVID-19 positive cases rise from just merely hundreds to now over 600,000 confirmed cases world wide. I saw deaths rise from barely a handful digits to now over 30,000 fatalities. I saw country by country locking their cities, struggling to control the infectious disease. Now, even my small hometown in the Philippines is in Community Quarantine. The horror of the recent months made me compromise the values and the promises that I swore I would never break. In the aim to prioritize my health and safety, I compromised sustainability.

The Sustainable Lifestyle Journey: My Hows and Whys

I’m not an expert or a person of high position. I am basically just a nobody who is trying to live a Sustainable Lifetsyle. A Sustainable Lifestyle, for me, is just meeting your basic needs without harming the environment in order to make essential resources available to sustain future generations. This article is about why and how I live a Sustainable Lifestyle, with more emphasis on the WHYs, because I think, it would easier for a person to distinguish the HOWs when the WHYs are put to heart.

I think many of us already know that humans are now facing the greatest threat to our kind, which is the Ecological Breakdown. But despite it all, we can only see very few actions being done. I can think of a number of reasons why, but I would like to assume that we are just not fully aware of what we are up against. I am hoping to at least shed some light on our current situation by anchoring this article on the 2 major factors of the Ecological Breakdown; (1) our Wastes and the (2) Climate Crisis, and on how, as an individual, I try to at least contribute on fighting them.

Living Zero-waste: Trash-free Food Shopping in Cebu City!

I always find posts on Facebook about people trying to do trash-free food shopping in Supermarkets and failed to do so because, Supermarkets will forever have packaged foods. Well ever since I started my zero-waste journey, one of the first things that I did to avoid trash is to shop in a place where it is not mandatory to package the food that I buy. If NYC has a Farmers’ Market where Lauren Singer does her food shopping, I have my most favorite place here in Cebu City; Carbon Market. ❤

I know, the place stinks and everybody has the stereotype that it is very dangerous to be there, but I actually don’t mind. I’ve been shopping my foods there even before I started my zero-waste journey and I always go home in one piece and I haven’t ever had any dangerous experience there. So you chill guys because, you might also start to have your very own Saturday Carbon Market Day (my favorite day of the week~) after reading this blog. 😉

Alright, so how do I do it? Lemme share to you some tips and tricks on how to do a trash-free food shopping:

Living Zero-waste: Homemade Organic Toothpaste

If there is product that I really love ever since I started my zero-waste lifestyle , it’s my homemade organic Toothpaste. Seriously guys, this toothpaste is heaven. I totally adore it.

Together with my homemade deodorant, this toothpaste is also one of the homemade products that I used when I started my zero-waste journey. That is because some of the ingredients were very easy to find and it is also very easy to create.

One of the perks of going zero-waste and switching to homemade products is that you always have the option to go organic and choose the safest ingredients you can find. That is important because, it cannot be denied that majority of the store-bought toothpastes have harmful chemicals in them. That is why I can absolutely say that I am not going back to my old favorite toothpaste. I am choosing not just a zero-waste but a safer alternative to my dental care!

Before we start, I would like to inform that this recipe is not mine. I got this from a Youtuber named Ashley. (Thank you Ashley!) You can check out her DIY toothpaste video here.

Alright, let’s do this!

Living Zero-waste: Homemade Organic Deodorant

If you decide to live a zero-waste lifestyle, you can never find a free-packaged deodorant from stores. With that, the only option available to you is to either create your own deodorant or look for free-packaged Potassium Alum (Tawas) near you. For me, I obviously chose the first alternative because Tawas has never worked for me in the past.

When I first decided to start my Zero-waste Journey, the first product that I created and used is my homemade deodorant. As I was researching for alternatives for store-bought deodorants, I learned that store-bought deodorants contain Aluminum that clogs the armpit pores. Because of this, our armpit cannot release the sweat, in which is the natural way of the armpit’s detoxification. This may cause Cancer and other illnesses. Moreover, the ingredients of homemade deodorants are very easy to find and these deodorants are also very effective in taking stinkiness away!

Please take note that this recipe is not mine. I got this from a Youtuber named Ashley. (Thank you Ashley!) You can check out her DIY deodorant video here.

Without further adieu, let’s start mixing now!
